Whenever I meet new people, the most common question I get is, “Where are you from?”. Over the years I’ve learned that, 9 times out of 10, what they’re really trying to ask is, “What race are you?”. I’m Vietnamese from my mother’s side, and Irish American from my father's side. I was born in Boulder Colorado in the year 1990. My father worked for a fire department as a paramedic and my mother was a technician in a chemistry lab.
As I got a little older, my dad started medical school, while still working full time on the fire department. That crazy work ethic continues to this day. I’m constantly inspired by this, though, honestly I never quite developed that work ethic for myself. In 2000, my dad graduated from medical school and was then accepted to a medical residency program in El Paso Texas. The move was hard on me at first because it was the first taste of culture shock. Eventually I adapted.
Upon graduating high school, I moved to Salt Lake City for college because I wanted to be back in the mountains. Technically, mechanical engineering was my major. More realistically, snowboarding was my major and engineering was my minor.
It was also in college that I began meditating. I started by studying Zen styles of mediation and philosophy at age 19. That then led to me yoga a few years later, when I was 22. Truth is, I was having a tough time handling the stress of college life and so an uncle of mine pointed in the direction of Zen to help. It definitely helped me stay somewhat straight in school, however, like snowboarding, I ended up studying a lot more Zen and Yoga than engineering.
Upon leaving school, I fought with myself night and day. One voice in my head said I was supposed to get an engineering job, while the other voice said that path was just not right for me. When I shared these feelings with my father, he suggested that I get certified to teach yoga, since that’s basically all I was doing by this time anyways. He was living in Houston and he offered to let me come live with him. He even helped me enroll in a local teacher training program where he was also doing yoga himself.
This turned out to be the best decision of my young life. I completed my teacher training and immediately began working and immersing myself in the Houston yoga community. The years began to fly by as I taught thousands of yoga classes, made hundreds of friends, and deepened my own practice. Most importantly, I met Annavy Nguyen, the woman who became my wife, my best friend, and my partner in all things.
Now, as of writing this, it’s 2019 and we have made another big leap by starting Loveland Yoga. I have no doubt that teaching yoga is my path in life, and I’m fully committed to following that path, no matter where it takes me. I look forward to seeing you in class and getting to know your story as well. Every day brings a new practice and every season brings a new lesson. Thank you for being part of our story.

I was born and raised in Houston Texas, right off of Airline and I-45. My parents come from a huge family made up of Vietnamese immigrants, and I am part of the first generation born here in America. I also have an older brother to whom I look up to, even though we fought constantly as children.
We grew up very modestly, aka, poor. My family first owned a chain of convenience stores, and my mother owned and operated a nail salon. Yes, I know that's very stereotypical, but honestly, they were damn good at it. I remember when I was little, my father would drive an hour to Galveston for our convenience store, and then drive all the way back up to the Cypress area to pick me up from Day Care. Till this day, I contribute my strong work ethic to both my parents.
As I got older, my mother continued to hustle hard at the nail shop and my dad sold our convenience store to work for Schlumberger. He spent 25 years there before retiring.
My education was pretty normal. I was an active kid in High School where I ran track, awesomely, and played tennis, terribly. My parents did not heavily focus on athleticism or sports even though I craved it much as a child. After high school, I went to UT Austin for College where I discovered yoga for stress relief for studying. Upon graduating, I moved back to Houston and started a career in the medical field as a dental assistant at a pediatric dental office. I know, more asian stereotypes.
After moving back to Houston it was hard for me to decide what path I wanted to go career wise so I decided to go back to University at UH. I graduated with a degree in Chemistry and Biology, with the intention of applying to Dental school. After numerous failures of trying to get into Dental School I decided to start working in the field to see if it would help.
From there I worked around from place to place until I eventually worked up to being a part owner of a Free Standing Ambulatory Surgical Center. I worked in dental for over ten years, and the truth is, I was very unhappy with this career. After fighting with myself for a very long time, I finally pushed aside my pride and decided to quit dental to do something different with my life
Now, as far as yoga goes, I found the practice in college and I continued with it throughout my career in dental. Yoga was the only consistent happy practice that I had in my life and it's what eventually led me to meeting my husband Bobby. We practice yoga together now, along with Jiu Jitsu, and I know these shared passions are a big part of what make our bond so strong.
Then, in April of 2019, after talking about it for a really long time, we decided to finally take the plunge and open Loveland Yoga.
Our vision for the studio is to create a space to share our passions with genuine heart, so our students feel cared about, appreciated, and like real people, instead of just a number. We hope you enjoy and love the space just as much as we love it. - Annavy

Yoga came into my life around age fifteen when I quit competitive gymnastics and was yearning to fill that void. I played volleyball in high school, so later on I found myself seeking relief from chronic lower back pain. I really missed the lightness that I felt in my body as a young gymnast.
After college I spent eight years living and working abroad, first in Madrid as an English teacher in bilingual public schools, then later Dubai. It was while living in Dubai and working as a flight attendant (a job I didn’t particularly enjoy and needed an escape from) that I began a regular yoga practice in a remarkable studio with international teachers who nurtured and inspired me. It was there that I was introduced to the magic of traditional Hatha, Ashtanga and not so traditional Jivamukti Yoga.
I completed my teacher training in Goa, India, and have returned to Houston to teach yoga full time. As a former gymnast and a psychology major in college, I enjoy exploring both the physical and emotional benefits that yoga brings.
My classes are vigorous, fluid and playful, and I aim to shift students’ physical practice toward a moving meditation that can be an escape from the constant mental chatter or “chitta vritti” we often have. By grounding, expanding, becoming aware of our breath, posture, and movement through space and life, we can create space and ease in both our bodies and minds.
Yoga offers a chance to change the relationship we have with ourselves, with the Earth, and to everyone around us. My hope is that you step off the mat feeling a little lighter, stronger, more balanced, and can carry that into other aspects of your life.
Fun fact: I love ASMR relaxation videos, even the weird eating ones!

The practice of yoga has brought so much joy into my life, and it continues to challenge and change me physically, mentally, and spiritually. I am excited to share this practice with everyone and I look forward to us learning from one another. My intention when leading a yoga practice is to create space, silence, and stillness for my fellow yogis. My yoga core values include sharing mindfulness, integrity, and joy with the yoga practice!
In 2010, after a few years of working as a general dentist, I had multiple aches and pains in my neck, shoulder, and back that were not easily treated by any other workout modality until I found yoga. Within days of practicing yoga, I found my body feeling physically better, my sleep improving in its quality, and my stress level reducing greatly. I was motivated by my new love for yoga and decided to attend my first yoga training in 2012 at YogaOne solely to deepen my practice. During the training, I decided I must share my practice with others. What started out as a physical practice has evolved into including a personal spiritual practice for me daily. The yoga practice continues to evolve for me personally and does not seem to end!
I was born in Sai Gon, Viet Nam, and immigrated to the United States when I was ten years old. I grew up in Southern California, and attended UCLA majoring in psychobiology with the hope of working in the health field. I attended dental school at Boston University and stayed in Boston working for a few years before finding my way to Houston, TX in 2010. Houston has been home for me since, and I am happy to be here. As the yoga community in Houston continues to grow and evolve, I find myself greatly motivated by everyone that commits to personal growth while on their yoga mat, and taking their yoga practice beyond the mat.
I have had the privilege of learning and training with Albina and Roger Rippy, Baron Baptiste, and Robert Boustany. I am currently certified as a 500H registered yoga teacher. Some of my other favorite yoga teachers in Houston are Cat Allen, Davina Davidson, Ann Hyde, Nancy Perry, Dan Houston, and Sarah Martin Montross.
Outside of yoga, my hobbies include gardening, attending theater events at Hobby Center, Alley Theater, Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet. On Sundays after brunch you can find me browsing vintage and antique stores, and or juggling multiple book club meetings. I also enjoy volunteering with Global Dental Relief yearly to provide dental services to children in countries like Guatemala, Nepal, and Cambodia thus far.

I am a human rights advocate and yoga teacher who was born and raised in Mexico City. My family is full of artists, activists, and free thinkers from diverse Portuguese, French, and Mexican backgrounds. Since I was a child, I’ve always been encouraged to follow my dreams, live a passionate life, and defend what I believe to be right. Also, as far back as I can recall, I’ve been a driven perfectionist, and highly motivated.
All together, these qualities led me to practice and love classical ballet for 15 years, as well as earn a B.A. in International Relations, followed by a graduate degree in Human Rights Studies at Columbia University.
During my graduate studies in NYC, I reaffirmed my passion for standing against abuses and working to empower vulnerable groups. Through this pursuit, I started working with international human rights non-profit organizations and using the opportunity to lead projects that promote the fundamental freedoms of activists, journalists, and indigenous leaders of Mexico and Central America.
My career as a human rights activist led me to find my other passion, yoga. My first contact with the practice was in my late teens. However, it was not until later when I started working with victims of heinous abuses that I became aware of my need to find an outlet for self-care. This need was what really drew me to yoga and helped me begin to understand the depth of the practice.
While living in Mexico City I started building a consistent practice and learned about different styles including Ashtanga, Hatha, and Vinyasa from local teachers. Soon after I moved to Houston with my awesome husband, I decided to pursue this passion too by doing a 200-hour yoga teacher training and Rocket Yoga training.
Now, I’m able to share with others all the benefits that this practice has brought to my life.
Yoga is a safe space, where I am able to tap into myself and seek stillness. Also, it’s a place for community and connection with the amazing like-minded humans who have become my yoga family.

As a native Houstonian, it’s fitting that my first yoga exposure happened at the University of Houston. I was pursuing a nutrition degree at the time and needed to knock out a PE credit while getting some much-needed flexibility in my life.
When the semester ended, I realized I had only just begun down the path that is yoga. Fast forward ten (plus?) years later, and I still feel as if my journey yoga is in its infancy.
Yoga allowed me to grow through many stages of life. It has been an outlet to channel anxiety and perfectionism and a tool to aid in practicing self-awareness and self-compassion.
I did end up finishing that nutrition degree (with honors I might add) and completed my Dietetic Internship through the University of Houston the following year, with rotations at various hospitals, universities, and outpatient clinics in Houston.
I earned my Masters’ in Nutrition from Texas Women’s University while simultaneously working full time as a Registered Dietitian (RD). Through it all, I practiced yoga. My passion and area of expertise as a RD is and has always been eating disorders, and teaching yoga is another avenue to assist others to heal and connect with their bodies.
I have practiced various styles with multiple teachers throughout the years, with my foundation in classical Ashtanga style and my heart currently in an alignment-focused flow.
After losing one of my first yoga teachers and mentors in 2018, the drive to step into my own power pushed me to pursue yoga teacher training. I completed my teacher training with YogaWorks and have been teaching in eating disorder treatment centers as well as for private events.
In my spare time I love love love to cook, read, bullet journal, and spend time with my boyfriend, William and our three fabulous kitties!

I grew up in a small town in Central Illinois. As a child I was always active and usually sitting on the floor, climbing on things or doing flips off the furniture.
Realizing my need for movement, my parents signed me up for dance. I danced competitively since the age of three and continued through high school.
As an adult, yoga replaced dance. You can now find me pulling out random yoga poses at school, work, home and of course the studio.
I attended University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and studied Mechanical Engineering. I choose mechanical engineering because I was not sure what I wanted to do in my career and mechanical was the broadest.
I moved to Houston in 2015 after accepting a job as an application engineer in the electrical field.
My first week in Houston I took my first yoga class.
I practiced regularly for a few years and felt the call to teacher training. At the time I signed up for teacher training the closest yoga studio to my hometown was 2 hours away. Watching my mother struggle to find a place to practice and thinking I would move back to a small town, I knew I needed to have the knowledge to take the practice with me.
Years later I still love living in Houston and am so glad I attended training and have the opportunity to teach.
For me, yoga is a balance of strength, movement, and meditation. Through yoga, I have cultivated a mind-body connection that is powerful on and off the mat. Yoga has helped me settle my need for constant movement and be more present while still.
I enjoy practicing with different teachers and trying different styles to keep going deeper into the practice and encourage students to do the same. I believe in props and enjoy the playfulness of experimenting with them in my home practice and love sharing that in class.
I am currently pursuing my MBA at University of Houston - Downtown and expect to graduate in December 2020. Can't wait to see you in class!

I was raised in Willis, Texas, a small town about 50 minutes north of Houston. My parents are from Central America and came to this country to create a better future for their children. I am forever grateful to them for all their sacrifices and wake up every day wanting to make them proud. I have a twin brother (he’s technically 30 minutes older than me) and three older sisters.
All throughout school, I was a perfectionist and definitely a nerd! I did academic competitions and was on the debate team. After high school, I decided to step it up and go to a slightly bigger town – College Station. This was a major time of exploration for me – I was involved in a lot of extracurriculars, traveled abroad, worked as a student researcher, and took lots of Pilates and dance classes. I wasn’t quite ready to leave the nice college life bubble, so I decided I would hang out for two more years and get my Master’s in Public Administration. Although I was thriving academically, I started suffering from depression during that time.
After graduation, I decided to take it up one more step and live the big city life in Houston. It was a hard adjustment – I was in a new city, I didn’t have a job lined up, I was still very much depressed, and I was having relationship troubles. A perfect storm telling me that I needed to focus on myself and do some self-work. At first, I tried running away from my problems, quite literally. I took up running for 8 months, and while it was fun, I never quite found the runners high. Then I got up the courage to go to a local yoga studio two minutes away from my apartment. I loved it and started practicing every day – all different styles, including the Original 26&2, Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga, and functional movement-type classes.
Yoga has taught me to be patient, kind, and loving to myself. It’s taught me that progress isn’t linear and there’s no neatly packaged end goal. Yoga has been my safe space, and it has also helped me find a community of true friends. Yoga has helped me to trust myself and to have an open heart toward others. I knew there was a lot more I wanted to learn about myself and the practice, so after 2.5 years of consistent, dedicated practice, I decided to pursue my Maha Hatha yoga teacher training with the Siddhi School of Yoga.
Now, I continue to learn and do my self-work, and I invite you to join me as we work toward being our higher selves on and off the mat <3
My advice for new students:
- Try different classes, try different teachers, learn something different from each of them, and then mix it all up into something that works best for you and your body
- Expand your comfort zone, be playful, and love yourself through it all
When I’m not at the studio, I love spending time with my dog, Taz, and being outside in nature (the Houston Arboretum is my favorite spot). I’m also learning French on Duolingo!

The practice of yoga initially entered my life during college as a desperate attempt to find balance and a better means of managing my stress as a Pre-med student and Biology major at Baylor University. I quickly fell in love with the practice of Hatha yoga taught by the instructor on campus.
I distinctively remember how the practice made my body feel and settled my mind at the end of each class.
After graduation, I moved back to Houston and stumbled upon Bikram Hot Yoga after having little luck with finding a Hatha yoga studio in Houston (This was 2009 and yoga studios were a dime a dozen). Although I felt the practice of Bikram yoga was physically challenging and allowed me to have space to center myself, I felt it had missed an element of community.
I moved away from Houston again to pursue a Master of science in Biomedical science at Mississippi college. During this time, I was not able to continue a regular practice of yoga due to Clinton, Mississippi being a small town. This period made me realized how essential yoga was in my life and how it was a powerful tool for coping with stress.
When I returned to Houston after obtaining my Masters, I found a community of similar minded yogis at YogaOne and later obtained my RTY 200 teacher training at the studio. I transitioned my practice towards Ashtanga in 2017 and was grateful to have found a teacher to mentor me through the Primary series.
This beautiful practice of yoga has facilitated not only my physical growth but most importantly my mental and spiritual growth over the years. This ancient practice has been a tool that has helped me through many changes in my life and serves as a constant, a safe place for me to come back to center myself.
My goal is to help my students connect with their breath and to find true alignment in their practice. I believe there is power in using mindful and intentional breaths to connect the mind, body and spirit. My classes provide opportunities to be challenged, curious and playful through a blend of strength, flexibility and balance.
When I am not at the studio, I spend most of my time at one of the many coffee shops around town. My other hobbies involve being outdoors such as running, riding my bike, hiking and going to the park. I also love discovering new art exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts and the Contemporary Art Museum.

I am a native Houstonian who grew up right here in Oak Forest on Woodcrest! I attended Stevens Elementary, Black Middle School and Graduated from Waltrip High School in 1989. I have so many memories of the neighborhood back then and have since lived in West University; MIssouri City; Harrogate, England; Oahu, Hawaii; and have landed squarely back in the Houston Heights.
My yoga journey started in 2012 after the unexpected death of my husband a few years before and being laid off from my Corporate Banking job where I’d made a career for 20 years. The years in between left me feeling lost, confused and unsure where to even start as I tried to figure out what life looked like for myself and my two boys.
I was invited to a new Yoga studio in Montrose which became BIG Yoga. When I entered the space I felt warm, welcomed and for the first time in a very long time SEEN! Then I experienced the practice. I was completely blown away. This tiny person has taken me from feeling cold to warm, sad to happy to crying. I had a full range of emotions and was left on my mat after class feeling warm, wrung out and like a piece of a giant weight had been lifted. It was then that I truly began to see myself, I was 40, a size 16 pushing a size 18 and had no idea who I was, what I wanted and more importantly, had little awareness of my body. I was HOOKED.
I started a consistent practice and began to get involved in the community. Just a few short months later, I started teacher training and became a RYT 200 Certified Teacher specializing in Baptiste Yoga teaching regularly since.
I’ve since trained in multiple teaching styles including YIN, Kids Yoga, Peak Pose Sequencing, Assisting and so many more. My learning is constant and I love adding new tools to my teaching tool box.
When I’m not teaching yoga, I am spending as much time as possible with my family. I’ve since remarried an amazing, wonderful and gorgeous Brittish gentleman who followed me from the UK to Hawaii and here to Houston. Both of my boys are grown up and here in Houston and I spend as much time with them and my extended family as well.
Fun fact, my mom is one of 16 and my dad is one of 13, so extended family is in abundance! And I love every crazy moment with them. I love nature, hiking, most animals (not a fan of insects...spiders eeeek) and being outdoors.
